ABSTRACT

The pathophysiology of functional bowel disorders is complex, involving disruptions in gut motility, visceral hypersensitivity, gut-brain-microbiota interactions, and psychosocial factors. Light pollution, as an environmental stressor, has been associated with disruptions in circadian rhythms and the aggravation of stress-related conditions. In this study, we investigated the effects of environmental stress, particularly continuous light exposure, on intestinal motility and inflammation using zebrafish larvae as a model system. We also evaluated the efficacy of probiotics, specifically Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum), at alleviating stress-induced constipation. Our results showed that continuous light exposure in zebrafish larvae increased the cortisol levels and reduced the intestinal motility, establishing a stress-induced-constipation model. We observed increased inflammatory markers and decreased intestinal neural activity in response to stress. Furthermore, the expressions of aquaporins and vasoactive intestinal peptide, crucial for regulating water transport and intestinal motility, were altered in the light-induced constipation model. Administration of probiotics, specifically B. longum, ameliorated the stress-induced constipation by reducing the cortisol levels, modulating the intestinal inflammation, and restoring the intestinal motility and neural activity. These findings highlight the potential of probiotics to modulate the gut-brain axis and alleviate stress-induced constipation. Therefore, this study provides a valuable understanding of the complex interplay among environmental stressors, gut function, and potential therapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACT

To obtain high-quality SiNxfilms applicable to an extensive range of processes, such as gate spacers in fin field-effect transistors (FinFETs), the self-aligned quadruple patterning process, etc, a study of plasma with higher plasma density and lower plasma damage is crucial in addition to study on novel precursors for SiNxplasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) processes. In this study, a novel magnetized PEALD process was developed for depositing high-quality SiNxfilms using di(isopropylamino)silane (DIPAS) and magnetized N2plasma at a low substrate temperature of 200 °C. The properties of the deposited SiNxfilms were analyzed and compared with those obtained by the PEALD process using a non-magnetized N2plasma source under the same conditions. The PEALD SiNxfilm, produced using an external magnetic field (ranging from 0 to 100 G) during the plasma exposure step, exhibited a higher growth rate (∼1 Å/cycle) due to the increased plasma density. Additionally, it showed lower surface roughness, higher film density, and enhanced wet etch resistance compared to films deposited using the PEALD process with non-magnetized plasmas. This improvement can be attributed to the higher ion flux and lower ion energy of the magnetized plasma. The electrical characteristics, such as interface trap density and breakdown voltage, were also enhanced when the magnetized plasma was used for the PEALD process. Furthermore, when SiNxfilms were deposited on high-aspect-ratio (30:1) trench patterns using the magnetized PEALD process, an improved step coverage of over 98% was achieved, in contrast to the conformality of SiNxdeposited using non-magnetized plasma. This enhancement is possibly a result of deeper radical penetration enabled by the magnetized plasma.

ABSTRACT

Campylobacter spp. constitute a significant global threat as a leading cause of foodborne illnesses, with poultry meat as a prominent reservoir for these pathogens. South Korea is known for its diverse poultry consumption habits, and continuous outbreaks make it a matter of concern to perform a meta-analysis to identify the primary source of contamination. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess and compare the prevalence of Campylobacter in various poultry and meat types while also considering the importance of environmental factors in South Korea. The meta-analysis revealed that duck meat exhibited the highest prevalence of Campylobacter, with a pooled estimate of 70.46% (95% CI: 42.80% to 88.38%), followed by chicken meat at a pooled prevalence of 36.17% (95% CI: 26.44% to 47.91%). Additionally, our analysis highlighted the predominance of C. jejuni and C. coli in South Korea. These findings underscore the importance of implementing rigorous food safety measures and establishing robust surveillance programs in the poultry industry to mitigate the risk of Campylobacter-related foodborne illnesses associated with meat consumption in South Korea.

ABSTRACT

Highly selective etching of silicon nitride over silicon oxide is one of the most important processes especially for the fabrication of vertical semiconductor devices including 3D NAND (Not And) devices. In this study, isotropic dry etching characteristics of SiNxand SiO2using ClF3/Cl2remote plasmas have been investigated. The increase of Cl2percent in ClF3/Cl2gas mixture increased etch selectivity of SiNxover SiO2while decreasing SiNxetch rate. By addition of 15% Cl to ClF3/Cl2, the etch selectivity higher than 500 could be obtained with the SiNxetch rate of ∼8 nm min-1, and the increase of Cl percent to 20% further increased the etch selectivity to higher than 1000. It was found that SiNxcan be etched through the reaction from Si-N to Si-F and Si-Cl (also from Si-Cl to Si-F) while SiO2can be etched only through the reaction from Si-O to Si-F, and which is also in extremely low reaction at room temperature. When SiNx/SiO2layer stack was etched using ClF3/Cl2(15%), extremely selective removal of SiNxlayer in the SiNx/SiO2layer stack could be obtained without noticeable etching of SiO2layer in the stack and without etch loading effect.

In this study, an isotropic etching process of SiO2 selective to Si3N4 using NF3/H2/methanol chemistry was investigated. HF was formed using a NF3/H2 remote plasma, and in order to remove the F radicals, which induces spontaneous etching of Si-base material, methanol was injected outside the plasma discharge region. Through this process, etch products were formed on the surface of SiO2, and then the (NH4)2SiF6 was removed by following heating process. When the H and F radicals were abundant, the highest SiO2 etch per cycle (EPC) was obtained. And, the increase of H2 and methanol percentage in the gas chemistry increased the etch selectivity by decreasing the F radicals. The etch products such as (NH4)2SiF6 were formed on the surfaces of SiO2 and Si3N4 during the reaction step and no noticeable spontaneous etching by formation of SiF4 was observed. By optimized conditions, the etch selectivity of SiO2 over Si3N4 and poly Si higher than 50 and 20, respectively, was obtained while having SiO2 EPC of ~ 13 nm/cycle. It is believed that the cyclic process using NF3/H2 remote plasma and methanol followed by heating can be applied to the selective isotropic SiO2 etching of next generation 3D device fabrication.

ABSTRACT

We investigated the effectiveness of integrative Korean medicine treatment in patients with pre-existing scoliosis who received inpatient care for traffic-accident-induced acute LBP. We selected 674 patients diagnosed with scoliosis between 1 January 2015, and 30 June 2021, using lumbar spine (L-spine) imaging, across four Korean medicine hospitals in Korea for a retrospective chart review and sent them a questionnaire-based follow-up survey. The primary outcome was a numeric rating scale (NRS) score of LBP. The secondary outcomes were the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), 5-level EuroQol 5-dimension (EQ-5D-5L), and patient global impression of change (PGIC) scores. In total, 101 patients responded to the follow-up survey. NRS scores decreased from 4.86 (4.71-5.02) to 3.53 (3.17-3.90) from admission to discharge, subsequently decreasing to 3.01 (2.64-3.38) (p < 0.001) at the last follow-up. Similarly, ODI scores decreased from 35.96 (33.08-38.85) to 22.73 (20.23-25.24) and 14.21 (11.74-16.67) (p < 0.001), respectively. Approximately 87.1% of patients were satisfied with their inpatient care. There were no significant differences in the degree of improvement according to the severity of scoliosis. Integrative Korean medicine treatment can improve pain, lumbar dysfunction, and quality of life in patients with traffic-accident-induced acute low back pain and pre-existing mild scoliosis.

Food poisoning outbreaks in schools can affect many students, causing physical and psychological damage and time and economic loss. Fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) have been used to monitor the contamination; however, the detection is time-consuming and confirms the contamination from all warm-blooded animals. Microbial source tracking (MST) is a molecular-based detection method that is host specific. This study aimed to evaluate MSTs and FIBs for tracing contamination in the school cafeteria. The average total aerobic count was 0.89 to 3.63 log CFU/100 cm2, and the faucets in the cooking area showed a significantly high aerobic count. The stove valve, faucet, and hand-washer were the most contaminated area, with a concentration of 1.90 to 6.80 log CFU/100 cm2 from the frequent hand contact. Escherichia coli was not detected on any surfaces, and coliform was detected on five surfaces: the sink and faucet in the food preparation area, the faucet in the cooking area, the hand-washer, and the toilet seat in the restroom with 0.33 to 3.64 log CFU/100 cm2. Human-specific crAssphage appeared on a faucet in the food preparation area, while HF183 was not detected. The result indicates that the continuous monitoring of frequent hand-contact areas is recommended to maintain the hygiene condition in the school cafeteria.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate the post-surgical stability of clockwise rotation of the maxillary occlusal plane (MXOP) after Le Fort I osteotomy for posterior impaction and advancement, in skeletal Class III patients who had undergone two-jaw orthognathic surgery (2J-OGS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample set consisted of 46 patients (18 males and 28 females). Using lateral cephalograms taken at the initial evaluation (T0), before 2J-OGS (T1), after 2J-OGS (T2) and at debonding (T3), the amount of MXOP change (criterion: 2° in ΔMXOP [between T2 and T3]) was used to assign patients to Group 1 (G1, high relapse, -3.09°) or Group 2 (G2, low relapse, -0.99°). Findings were statistically compared between the groups. RESULTS: Compared with G2, G1 exhibited more severe skeletal Class III relationships and a flatter MXOP at T0, a greater increase in ΔANB, and more clockwise rotation of ΔMXOP and ΔFMA between T1 and T2. G1 also showed a greater decrease in ΔANB, higher counterclockwise rotation of ΔMXOP and upward movement of U1 between T2 and T3. Regression analysis yielded the following equation: MXOP (ΔT2-T3) = -0.37 X MXOP (ΔT1-T2) -0.43. CONCLUSIONS: The higher the clockwise rotation of the MXOP during 2J-OGS in skeletal Class III patients, the greater the subsequent relapse (counterclockwise rotation) of the MXOP.

ABSTRACT

Background: The rise in telecommuting or non-face-to-face work owing to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has fueled conversations regarding the "right to disconnect." Although evidence suggests that receiving work-related communications through telecommunication devices outside of work hours may lead to various symptoms and illnesses, limited research has been undertaken on these symptoms. This study therefore aims to investigate the correlation between receiving work communications through telecommunication devices after work hours and the occurrence of work-related headaches and eyestrain in full-time, non-shift white-collar workers. Methods: This study used data from the 6th Korean Working Conditions Survey. The frequency of using telecommunication devices for work purposes outside of working hours was divided into five categories: "Every day," "Several times a week," "Several times a month," "Rarely," and "Never." Work-related headaches and eyestrain were categorized based on a "yes" or "no" response to the survey questions. Descriptive statistics, χ2 tests, and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed using SPSS 27.0. Results: After adjusting for sex, age, income level, education, occupation, workplace size, work hours, and sleep disorders, the odds ratio (OR) of work-related headaches and eyestrain based on frequency of telecommunication device usage were as follows: "rarely" (OR: 1.292; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.111-1.503), "several times a month" (OR: 1.551; 95% CI: 1.249-1.926), "several times a week" (OR: 1.474; 95% CI: 1.217-1.784), and "every day" (OR: 1.548; 95% CI: 1.321-1.813). Conclusions: Employees who use telecommunication devices for work after regular hours are more susceptible to experiencing work-related headaches and eyestrain compared to those who do not. However, there is a dearth of research examining the physical and mental health impacts of using telecommunication devices for after-hours work. Furthermore, the existing preventative measures in Korea are insufficient. Consequently, it is imperative to develop effective measures and conduct additional research to address this issue.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: A recombinant protein cannot induce sufficient immune response by itself. Various substances, including cytokine and mineral, have been used as adjuvants to enhance the immunogenicity and efficacy of vaccines; however, most of them induce excessive immune responses or exhibit cytotoxicity. In this study, a self-emulsifying drug delivery system (SEDDS), an isotropic mixture of oil, surfactant, and solvent, was designed for oil-in-water emulsions as a non-toxic adjuvant to increase immune response to antigens. Methods: Squalene-based oil-in-water emulsions were prepared by SEDDS to assess its value as an adjuvant. Fifteen emulsions (F1-F15) were prepared by stirring two types of surfactants (Span® 85 and Kolliphor® RH40), and squalene and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were added at different ratios. The physical properties and viscosity of the 15 emulsions were evaluated by measuring droplet size, zeta potential, and polydispersity index. The toxic effect of emulsions was assessed by acute toxicity test in mice. Mice were immunized twice with 1:1 mixtures of antigen and adjuvant (15 emulsions, phosphate-buffered saline, and commercial alum-based adjuvant). Antigen-specific antibody titers from immunized mice serum were measured by an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: All emulsions exhibited droplet sizes ranging from 322 to 812 nm and maintained zeta potential values between -30 mV to -10 mV for 4 weeks, indicating good physical stability as a vaccine adjuvant. Additionally, all emulsions were non-toxic, and they induced humoral immunity at a similar level compared to commercial alum-based adjuvant in the first immunization. However, 12% squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion containing 0.5% of ultra-high viscosity CMC (F15) showed significantly higher immune response than a commercial adjuvant in the second immunization. Conclusion: Squalene-based oil-in-water emulsions could be conveniently prepared using SEDDS technique and are non-toxic and stable at room temperature storage. Moreover, squalene-based oil-in-water emulsions show enhanced immune induction with antigen; hence, they can possibly be used as effective adjuvants.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the long-term clinical efficacy of and satisfaction with integrative Korean medicine (KM) treatment in patients with shoulder osteoarthritis (SOA). We conducted a prospective observational study of patients with SOA. Patients aged 19 years and older who underwent inpatient treatment for more than 1 week were eligible for enrollment in the study. The primary evaluation index was the numeric rating scale for shoulder pain. Sub-evaluation indices included the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index for shoulder function, EuroQol-5-dimension score for overall quality of life, and Patient Global Impression of Change. Outcome measures were assessed at admission, discharge, and follow-up. For the follow-up questionnaire survey, the following information was collected: current status, surgery after discharge, reasons for finding integrative KM treatment satisfactory/unsatisfactory, and quality of life after discharge. In total, 186 patients were enrolled in the primary analysis, and 103 patients completed the follow-up survey. The mean number of days of follow-up was 1019 ±â€…439. Compared with the baseline, the mean differences in the numeric rating scale and Shoulder Pain and Disability Index were 3.05 ±â€…0.34 and 36.06 ±â€…5.53, respectively. Regarding the Patient Global Impression of Change, 89 out of 103 (86.4%) patients chose "minimally improved" or better. Furthermore, the EuroQol-5-dimension score also increased, showing an improvement of health-related quality of life after treatment. Integrative KM treatment is a potential option for reducing pain severity and improving function and health-related quality of life in patients with SOA. Prospective randomized studies would support this finding for the next step.

ABSTRACT

Catalytic oxidation is a feasible method for remediating volatile organic compounds (VOCs), due to its lower energy consumption and mineralization of VOCs into H2O and CO2. Noble metal-based catalysts are preferred for the catalytic oxidation of VOCs because of their superior activity, but they are usually deactivated by thermal aging which sinters the metal particles. Here, we report that Pt-Pd/Al2O3 thermally aged at 700-900 °C in air showed enhanced catalytic activity for toluene oxidation in humid conditions. There were electronic and structural changes in the thermally aged Pt-Pd/Al2O3, as confirmed by numerous analyses. Both Pt and Pd existed in a metallic rather than oxidized state without additional reduction steps. The noble metal particles were assembled to form Pt-Pd alloy, in the form of isolated Pd atoms surrounded by Pt atoms. This specific alloy structure was found to be crucial to the observed enhancement in catalytic toluene oxidation at low temperature.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Accumulating evidence has shown the beneficial effects of isoflavone on health. There is limited information on the usual isoflavone intake for Koreans. This study examined the usual intake of total isoflavone and its major food sources in Koreans according to age and gender. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The dietary intake data of 21,271 participants aged 1 yrs and older from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) VII 2016-2018 were analyzed. The average isoflavone intake was estimated based on the 24-h dietary recall data in KNHANES and the isoflavone database from the Korea Rural Development Administration (RDA) and literatures. The usual isoflavone intake was estimated by applying the ratio of within- and between-participant variance estimated from the 2009 KNHANES data to the 7th KNHANES (2016-2018) data. The variance of the isoflavone intake was calculated using MIXTRAN macro with intake data for two days in the 2009 KNHANES. Complex sample analysis with stratified variables and integrated weights was conducted. RESULTS: The mean total isoflavone intake in the Korean population aged 1 yrs and older (n = 21,271) was 139.27 mg/d, which was higher than the usual intake of 47.44mg/d. Legumes were a major contributing food group (91%), with arrowroot being a major individual contributor to the isoflavone intake (67.2%), followed by 21.3% of soybean, 5.4% of bean sprouts, and 2.1% of tofu. The usual isoflavone intake was highest in the participants aged 50 to 64 yrs old and increased with age until 50 to 64 yrs and then decreased with further increases in age. The usual isoflavone intake of participants aged 65 yrs and older was higher for men than for women, showing gender differences. CONCLUSIONS: The usual dietary intake of isoflavone varied according to age and gender in the Korean population. This study showed that the usual isoflavone intake was lower than the average isoflavone intake. The difference between percentiles of the usual isoflavone intake was similarly smaller than the average intake. An estimation of average intake can be hindered by the occasional consumption of foods high in isoflavones, suggesting that the usual intake estimation method can be more appropriate. Further research will be needed to establish isoflavone dietary guidelines regarding the effects of isoflavone intake on health outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Dispersion of nanofillers in a polymer matrix is one of the most important steps in preparing polymer nanocomposites. However, hydrophobic polymers and hydrophilic nanofillers are intrinsically incompatible, making it difficult to mix them homogeneously. Here, we propose the swelling-based particle adsorption method (SPA) providing a simple route to disperse cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) within incompatible polypropylene (PP) matrix without surface functionalization of CNFs. The SPA enables CNFs to adsorb onto the surface of PP particles using a small amount of solvent. PP/CNFs composite films fabricated from the SPA showed increased Young's modulus by 80%, which agrees well with a theoretical prediction proving nano-dispersed. Furthermore, simply mixing a bit of polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride can improve the tensile strength by 30% and the elongation at break by 10-fold than that of PP/CNFs composites. The SPA can be universally applied to any incompatible polymer-nanofiller pairs for the fabrication of nanocomposite materials.

ABSTRACT

A 60-year-old man diagnosed with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presented to the hospital with pain in the perineal region. He had been taking lenvatinib every day for 2 months after he was diagnosed with HCC with metastases to the lymph node, small bowel mesentery, and retroperitoneal space. Enhanced abdominal computed tomography revealed mild elevation in intensity in the perineal subcutaneous tissue with subcutaneous emphysema. The patient was diagnosed with Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events grade 3, skin ulceration of stage IV with full-thickness skin loss and tissue necrosis in the muscular layer. The patient was taken off the medication with prescription of antibiotics, and after 3 weeks, the skin has fully recovered. This is the first report of an HCC patient who presented with a skin ulceration of stage IV after lenvatinib treatment. We recommend stopping the medication immediately and changing to alternative treatments with appropriate supportive care.

Purpose: To evaluate cognitive function with ease at bedside, we developed a novel neurologic exam called the "food memory test (FMT)" and evaluated its validity for use in clinical practice. Methods: In this prospective study in a neurology clinic, we asked patients about what they had eaten for the soup and main dish at the last meal [FMT1] and the second-to-last meal [FMT2]. If they answered correctly for both the soup and main dish, they received a "pass" score. If they did not answer or chose the wrong food, they received a "fail" score. We also performed conventional cognitive function tests for comparison. Results: A total of 27 patients was enrolled, and 12 (44.4%) passed the FMT1 test. FMT1 has a strong correlation with conventional memory function tests, including time-place orientation, three-word recall, the Seoul Verbal Learning Test, and the Rey Complex Figure Test . FMT1 was not correlated with a depression score or with frontal lobe function tests. FMT2 showed less significant correlation with conventional memory tests. Conclusion: These results suggest that FMT1 is a reliable bedside test to evaluate recent memory. Clinical application of FMT in daily clinical practice is warranted.

In this review of the most recent applications of deep learning to ultrasound imaging, the architectures of deep learning networks are briefly explained for the medical imaging applications of classification, detection, segmentation, and generation. Ultrasonography applications for image processing and diagnosis are then reviewed and summarized, along with some representative imaging studies of the breast, thyroid, heart, kidney, liver, and fetal head. Efforts towards workflow enhancement are also reviewed, with an emphasis on view recognition, scanning guide, image quality assessment, and quantification and measurement. Finally some future prospects are presented regarding image quality enhancement, diagnostic support, and improvements in workflow efficiency, along with remarks on hurdles, benefits, and necessary collaborations.

ABSTRACT

Many predictive tools have been reported for assessing osteoporosis risk. The development and validation of osteoporosis risk prediction models were supported by machine learning. INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a silent disease until it results in fragility fractures. However, early diagnosis of osteoporosis provides an opportunity to detect and prevent fractures. We aimed to develop machine learning approaches to achieve high predictive ability for osteoporosis risk that could help primary care providers identify which women are at increased risk of osteoporosis and should therefore undergo further testing with bone densitometry. METHODS: We included all postmenopausal Korean women from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES V-1, V-2) conducted in 2010 and 2011. Machine learning models using methods such as the k-nearest neighbors (KNN), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), gradient boosting machine (GBM), support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural networks (ANN), and logistic regression (LR) were developed to predict osteoporosis risk. We analyzed the effect of applying the machine learning algorithms to the raw data and featuring the selected data only where the statistically significant variables were included as model inputs. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) were used to evaluate performance among the seven models. RESULTS: A total of 1792 patients were included in this study, of which 613 had osteoporosis. The raw data consisted of 19 variables and achieved performances (in terms of AUROCs) of 0.712, 0.684, 0.727, 0.652, 0.724, 0.741, and 0.726 for KNN, DT, RF, GBM, SVM, ANN, and LR with fivefold cross-validation, respectively. The feature selected data consisted of nine variables and achieved performances (in terms of AUROCs) of 0.713, 0.685, 0.734, 0.728, 0.728, 0.743, and 0.727 for KNN, DT, RF, GBM, SVM, ANN, and LR with fivefold cross-validation, respectively. CONCLUSION: In this study, we developed and compared seven machine learning models to accurately predict osteoporosis risk. The ANN model performed best when compared to the other models, having the highest AUROC value. Applying the ANN model in the clinical environment could help primary care providers stratify osteoporosis patients and improve the prevention, detection, and early treatment of osteoporosis.

ABSTRACT

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are promising candidates as a sustainable polymer reinforcement material, but incompatibility makes it difficult to be incorporated into a polymeric matrix. Pickering emulsion-templated synthesis, in which nanometer-sized polymeric particles covered with CNFs are formed, provides a useful route to disperse nano-sized fillers within incompatible polymers. However, CNF does not always adsorb to monomer droplets (e.g., methyl methacrylate), which is the most important step fabricating polymeric particles covered by CNFs. Here, by adding an appropriate oil to a monomer, we show that the adsorption of CNF on the oil can be dramatically enhanced by controlling the interfacial tension. Using this approach, poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites reinforced with CNFs were fabricated. The PMMA nanocomposite films exhibit high optical properties and mechanical properties as well as thermal stability. The Pickering emulsion template with the additional oil approach can be applied to any emulsion-based polymerization methods for nanocomposite materials.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) tools may be useful platforms for dietary monitoring and assessment. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile dietary self-monitoring app for weight loss versus a paper-based diary among adults with a BMI of 23 kg/m2 or above. METHODS: A total of 33 men and 17 women aged 18-39 years participated in a 6-week randomized controlled trial. We randomly assigned participants to one of two groups: (1) a smartphone app group (n=25) or (2) a paper-based diary group (n=25). The smartphone app group recorded foods and dietary supplements that they consumed and received immediate dietary feedback using Well-D, a dietary self-monitoring app developed by our team. The paper-based diary group was instructed to record foods or supplements that they consumed using a self-recorded diary. The primary outcomes were weight, BMI, waist circumference, body fat mass, and skeletal muscle mass. We also examined changes in nutrient intake, including energy, carbohydrate, protein, fat, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals, using 3-day 24-hour recalls. Differences in changes between the two groups were analyzed using independent t tests or Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney tests. All of the data were analyzed using intent-to-treat analysis. RESULTS: The mean number of days recorded was 18.5 (SD 14.1) for the app group and 15.5 (SD 10.1) for the paper-based diary group. The differences in changes in weight, BMI, and waist circumference were not significantly different between the app group and paper-based diary group (P=.33, .34, and .70, respectively). Similarly, changes in body fat mass or skeletal muscle mass did not differ between the two groups (P=.71 and .054, respectively). Although energy intake was reduced in both groups, there was no significant difference in changes in energy intake between the two groups (P=.98). CONCLUSIONS: There were no differences in changes in anthropometric measures and nutrient intake between the app group and the paper-based diary group. Both mobile dietary self-monitoring app and paper-based diary may be useful for improving anthropometric measures.
